Nga Manu Celebration
Celebrating Art and Community at the Unveiling of "Ngā Manu" Sculpture
Pohū Arts were delighted to extend congratulations to the Public Arts team at Auckland Council, and the exceptional members of Pakuranga Rotary for their unwavering dedication in bringing the captivating "Ngā Manu" sculpture to life.
Crafted by the incredibly talented artist Dion Hitchens, "Ngā Manu," meaning "Birds" in Māori, now graces the Rotary Walkway in Farm Cove, Pakuranga.
As the event organisers for this momentous occasion, it was an honor to play a part in making this day even more memorable. The community gathered to witness the unveiling, enjoying inspiring speeches and captivating performances from the Saint Kentigern Pipe Band and the Fraser School of Dance.
The festivities continued with a delicious BBQ, face painting, manu aute kite + poi making, and engaging children's activities, turning the afternoon into a celebration of creativity and community spirit.

Matariki ki Sandringham Celebration
Embracing Matariki in Sandringham: A Resounding Celebration of Culture and Community
We are pleased to share the success of the Matariki celebration organised for SPiCE, a community-led development Trust located in Sandringham.
This vibrant event beautifully embodied the spirit of connection, respect, and support for Mana Whenua and the wider Maori community.
Cultural Connection: At the heart of our celebration was a profound commitment to honoring and connecting with local Iwi Ngāti Whatua o Orakei. The event commenced with a mihi, karakia, and waiata, setting the tone for the afternoon fifilled with cultural richness. Delightful stories shared by Iwi about Matariki further enriched the experience. The community was thrilled to enjoy toi workshops for all ages, waiata performances and face painting, creating a tapestry of cultural experiences.
Engaging Workshops: Our toi workshops provided a hands-on experience, allowing participants to delve into the arts, crafts, and traditions associated with Matariki. From storytelling to weaving, these activities fostered a profound sense of connection to the cultural roots that define our community.
Kapahaka Excellence: The celebration reached new heights with Kapahaka legend Raya Emery treating our community to a captivating Kapahaka class. Her inspiring displays of Maori performing arts added a dynamic and spirited dimension to the event, creating moments of cultural brilliance.
Delicious Kai: No celebration is complete without delicious food, and our Matariki event delivered just that. Local flavors consisted of delightful mussel fritters and seafood chowder, vegan offerings, and baking from the local PTA.
Community Support: Beyond the cultural festivities, the event had a profound impact on the community. The local PTA's initiative to raise funds for netball hoops at Edendale School garnered tremendous support, showcasing the strength of community bonds and the positive impact of coming together for a shared cause.
The event not only celebrated Matariki but also served as a testament to the power of community, culture, and collaboration, reaffirming the vibrant spirit of Sandringham.
