Celebrating Culture and Creativity: Unveiling the Waters of Waimāhia Mural Project

We are excited to unveil the Waters of Waimāhia Mural Project, a transformative journey that has not only reshaped the ambiance of Te Pātaka Kōrero o Waimāhia (Clendon Library) but has also become a living canvas for shared stories and cultural celebration. This expansive window mural is the result of a collaborative effort involving our community, Iwi, and, most importantly, our cherished tamariki (children). At its core, this artistic endeavor is a dynamic platform for transcending the ordinary portrayal of our local beach, serving as a canvas for the rich purakau (stories) integral to future programs and creative workshops.

Children visiting the library will not only have the unique opportunity to learning the important history of Iwi Te Akitai o Waiohua but contribute to the ongoing narrative by creating their own art and sharing their purakau directly on the mural's glass surface. This interactive element ensures that the mural continues to evolve, echoing the vibrant voices of our community.

Guiding this remarkable project was Artist Paula Green and Whaea Kathleen Wilson from Te Ākitai o Waiohua iwi, the kaitiaki (guardian) of purakau from our local area. Wilson's unwavering guidance and visionary insight have ensured that the artwork authentically reflects our cultural heritage, weaving in stories that make our region truly unique, including that of Reremoana, a revered tupuna whaea from Te Ākitai o Waiohua.

For Paula Green, this project carries a deep personal connection dating back to her teenage years at the local school, James Cook High. The dream of a mural on the side of Clendon Library was conceived then but was unfortunately cancelled. Now, years later, coming full circle, Green was able to fulfill that dream, and enrich community through art.

We invite you to witness this transformative moment, where art becomes a bridge connecting our past, present, and future.

Harakeke in the Gardens

"Harakeke in the Gardens" and Community Connection:

A Tapestry of Art and Stories

We are excited to share the multifaceted story behind the "Harakeke in the Gardens" mural—a project that goes beyond paint and canvas to weave together the vibrant fabric of the Manurewa community.

Located on Stratford Road, near the Botanical Gardens, this mural is a true labor of love, reflecting the essence of our community. Inspired by the rich Harakeke collection within the gardens and acknowledging the symbolic tī kōuka tree of the local Iwi, it stands as a testament to our deep cultural roots.

As the mural took form, the responses from passersby became an integral part of the creative journey. Heartwarming chats with locals, beeps of car horns, thumbs-up gestures, and enthusiastic shouts of appreciation echoed through the process. This interaction with the community became a powerful reminder that art has the incredible ability to connect people, spark joy, and brighten even the most ordinary days.

A sincere thank you extends to Chorus NZ Limited and Beautification Trust for providing the opportunity to bring "Harakeke in the Gardens" to life.

But the magic doesn't end there. This mural isn't just about painting 'something'; it's a vibrant depiction drawing inspiration from the heart of our community. Rooted in a deep passion for participatory art, we welcomed the community's influence and stories.

Local children, with their infectious enthusiasm, requested a rainbow—their favorite image. Some even joined me to paint pretty flowers, their dreams now infused with the joy of becoming artists.

For a nearby family, the once-dull green Chorus cabinet transformed into a beautiful painting brought immense joy. An elderly gentleman's visit inspired the inclusion of Tui, and it is our hope that seeing them daily brings him happiness.

These interactions are the heartbeat of our project, reminding us that art brings us together, bridging generations and backgrounds.
